Skin Allergy Test (Skin Prick Test)
A skin allergy test involves pricking the skin with a needle tip to allow the test solution to penetrate the skin. After 15 minutes, if the patient is allergic to a specific allergen, a raised, swollen, red reaction (a wheal) will appear at that site.
Generally, the test can be performed on people of all ages and genders. However, in infants younger than 6 months and in the elderly, it may produce a false negative result due to lower skin sensitivity.
