Fraud Alert! Beware of Scammers Using Forged Medical Certificates to Extort Compensation from Restaurants
Khon Kaen Ram Hospital has received reports concerning fraudulent schemes involving the forgery of hospital medical certificates to intimidate and extort money from restaurant operators.
Modus Operandi
- Scammers (some of whom may have been actual patients who altered authentic medical certificates) contact restaurants they previously visited.
- They claim to have suffered severe illness, diarrhea, or food poisoning as a direct result of dining at the establishment.
- They present photos of "forged medical certificates" with edited details specifying diagnoses consistent with their claims, along with forged physician signatures and falsified hospital stamps.
- They demand compensation from the restaurant for medical expenses or emotional distress.
Khon Kaen Ram Hospital clarifies that the hospital has no involvement in such fraudulent acts. Reproducing, altering, or forging medical certificates constitutes a criminal offense. The hospital will pursue strict legal action against anyone falsely claiming or misrepresenting the hospital’s name and official documents.
Advice for Restaurant Owners: Do not rush to transfer compensation or medical fees under threat.
- Request full, clear photos of the medical certificate and the medical receipt showing all details as evidence.
- Contact the hospital directly with the patient's full name or document ID to verify the document's authenticity.
