Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and Toe-Brachial Index (TBI)
What is ABI / TBI Testing?
The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and Toe-Brachial Index (TBI) are non-invasive tests used to check for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). They measure blood vessel flexibility and detect blockages by comparing the blood pressure at your extremities (ankles and toes) with the blood pressure in your arm.
These tests can identify arterial blockages in the legs at an early stage. Medical data suggests that individuals with blockages in their legs are significantly more likely to also have blockages in the arteries leading to the heart and brain.
Therefore, an abnormal ABI/TBI result serves as a critical warning sign for potential Ischemic Heart Disease or Stroke. Early detection allows physicians to provide lifestyle guidance and further diagnostic steps, leading to simpler and more effective treatment.
The procedure is entirely painless, requires no special preparation, takes only about 10 minutes, and provides immediate results.
Who Should Get an ABI / TBI?
- Current or former smokers.
- Individuals with obesity (BMI greater than 25).
- Patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
- Anyone who has experienced chest pain or unusual fatigue during exertion.
- Those with a family history of heart disease or ischemic stroke.
Procedure Steps
- The patient lies flat on an examination bed.
- Blood pressure cuffs are placed on both arms, then on both ankles and toes.
- The device automatically calculates the ratio between the pressures to determine the ABI and TBI values.
