Minimally Invasive Varicose Vein Treatment with Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
**Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation (ERA)** is a method for treating varicose veins using radiofrequency energy, which is converted into heat to destroy the inner wall of the vein. It is suitable for large varicose veins with venous reflux (leaky valves). This procedure is non-surgical: a small puncture is made above the knee to insert a heat-delivery catheter to ablate the vein. The varicose vein will shrink by **90–100% within 6–8 weeks**.
Advantages
- The incision is very small, only 2–3 millimeters, resulting in minimal bruising and pain at the wound site.
- Short recovery time, allowing a quick return to daily activities.
- Fast results, effectively reducing pain from varicose veins.
RFA Varicose Vein Treatment Procedure
- The doctor will administer general anesthesia before the treatment.
- The doctor uses an ultrasound machine to locate the vein and then punctures the internal saphenous vein above the knee. A small tube (sheath) is inserted into the vein, followed by the heat-delivery catheter to the treatment site. Radiofrequency energy is then released, converting into heat of about 120 degrees Celsius. This heat causes the collagen fibers, the main structure of the vein wall, to shrink and eventually collapse.
- After the treatment, the doctor will apply pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding; stitches are not required.
- The total treatment time is approximately 1 hour.
- Upon completion of the procedure, the patient will be moved to the recovery room for about 2 hours, then transferred to an inpatient room. The patient will stay in the hospital for 2 days before being discharged by the doctor.
Post-Treatment Self-Care
- You can resume normal activities, but **avoid lifting heavy objects and prolonged sitting or standing** for 3–7 days.
- Wear **compression stockings** for at least 1 month after the treatment.
- You should walk or move your body frequently and regularly for exercise.

Preparation Before Treatment
- Fast (no food or water) for at least 6 hours.
- Inform your doctor about any regular medications you are taking.
