Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Patient performing a Pulmonary Function Test

What is a Pulmonary Function Test?

A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) measures the volume and flow rate of air as you breathe in and out of your lungs. During the test, you will breathe through a device called a Spirometer. The machine processes your breathing effort into graphs and data values, which allow doctors to evaluate your lung health. The entire procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.

Who Should Get a PFT?

  • Regular smokers or those frequently exposed to second-hand smoke.
  • Individuals with a chronic cough or those suspected of having asthma or COPD (Emphysema).
  • People living or working in high-pollution areas, such as locations with high PM 2.5 levels or heavy traffic exhaust.
  • Workers in high-risk industries, including those exposed to dust, metal vapors, textile fibers, mining, or cement production.

Preparation for the PFT

  • Avoid Heavy Meals: Do not eat a large meal for at least 2 hours before the test to ensure you can breathe deeply without discomfort.
  • No Smoking or Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol on the day of the test.

PFT Procedure Steps

  1. The patient sits upright in a comfortable position.
  2. The patient places their mouth around a disposable cardboard mouthpiece, sealing their lips tightly to prevent air from leaking.
  3. A technician will provide specific instructions on how to breathe (e.g., taking a deep breath and exhaling as hard and fast as possible) to record accurate data.
