How to Properly Wear a Surgical Face Mask
Wearing a face mask correctly is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others from respiratory infections and air pollution. Follow these steps for maximum protection:
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Wash your hands: Always clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol gel before touching a new mask.
- Position the mask: Ensure the colored side (usually green or blue) faces outward and the white side faces your face. The stiff, bendable edge (the nose wire) should be at the top.
- Secure the mask: Place the loops over your ears or tie the strings behind your head.
- Cover completely: Pull the bottom of the mask over your chin and the top over your nose. It should fit snugly against the sides of your face with no gaps.
- Press the nose wire: Use your fingers to mold the metal strip to the shape of your nose bridge to prevent air from leaking in or out.
Important Dos and Don'ts
- Do not touch: Avoid touching the front of the mask while wearing it. If you do, wash your hands immediately.
- Do not reuse: Surgical masks are for single use only. Replace your mask if it becomes damp, soiled, or damaged.
- Dispose properly: When removing the mask, hold it by the ear loops only. Fold it inward, place it in a plastic bag, and dispose of it in a closed bin. Wash your hands immediately afterward.
