Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes Awareness

Sudden Collapse: Why Even Fit Athletes Can Die on the Field

While sudden death in older adults is more common, why does it happen to young, fit athletes? How can someone in peak physical condition die so unexpectedly?

The answer is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). The heart abruptly stops functioning, failing to pump blood to vital organs like the brain and the heart itself. This leads to immediate loss of consciousness and, in many cases, death.

High-intensity exercise can act as a trigger, but other contributing factors are often involved, such as an electrolyte imbalance in the bloodstream.

Low levels of potassium and magnesium, drug use, or an overactive autonomic nervous system can all lead to fatal heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats).

  • For individuals over 35: The primary cause is often acute coronary artery occlusion (blocked arteries), which leads to a fatal heart attack.
  • For younger individuals and athletes: The causes vary but are typically related to:
    • Congenital heart defects: Such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle) or an enlarged heart.
    • Congenital coronary artery abnormalities.
    • Myocarditis: Inflammation of the heart muscle.

When Should You Get a Detailed Check-up?

  1. If you have a history of fainting (syncope), or experience chest pain, dizziness, or lightheadedness during exercise.
  2. If you have a family history of unexplained fainting or sudden, premature death.
