Bone Density Testing at Khon Kaen Ram Hospital

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a decrease in bone mass and lower calcium levels compared to healthy individuals, making bones brittle and prone to fractures. A Bone Densitometry (or Bone Mass Measurement) test is a highly accurate method to assess your risk of osteoporosis.

The scanner utilizes Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) technology to analyze bone density, mineral composition, and tissue structure. The machine performs a single scan of the body, creating an image of the bone tissue which is then analyzed and processed by a computer to provide rapid and precise results.

The test typically evaluates areas most susceptible to osteoporosis, including the lumbar spine (lower back), hips (proximal femur), and forearms.

The procedure takes approximately 20–30 minutes. It is non-invasive, painless, and safe. However, because it involves a low dose of radiation, it is not suitable for pregnant women.

Who Should Get a Bone Density Test?

  • Women aged 45 and above, and men aged 60 and above.
  • Women who reached menopause before age 45 or had both ovaries surgically removed.
  • Postmenopausal women who have experienced a height loss of 4 cm or more, or have a BMI below 20.
  • Individuals who have taken steroid medications for an extended period.
  • Those whose X-rays show signs of osteopenia (bone thinning) or spinal deformities.
  • Patients with conditions that cause bone loss, such as kidney failure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thalassemia, or cancer.
  • Individuals with a family history of osteoporosis.

How to Prepare for the Test

  • No fasting is required; you may eat and drink normally.
  • Pregnancy: You must not be pregnant. If you suspect you are pregnant, notify the staff immediately.
  • Recent Imaging: Ensure you have not had an X-ray involving contrast media (barium swallow/enema) within 7 days prior to the test.
  • Accessories: Remove all jewelry and metallic accessories, such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, and hair clips, before the scan.

The Procedure

  1. The patient lies comfortably on a padded examination table.
  2. The machine scans the body and analyzes the bone density.
  3. The specialist records and interprets the results.

Interpreting the Results (T-score)

Your bone density is compared to the average peak bone mass of a healthy 30–40 year old. This comparison is expressed as a Standard Deviation (T-score), which is used to diagnose the condition:

T-score higher than -1.0 Normal Bone Density
T-score between -1.0 and -2.5 Osteopenia (Low Bone Mass)
T-score of -2.5 or lower Osteoporosis

For follow-up screenings, it is highly recommended to use the same machine. Different scanners may have varying reference values and measurement variances, which can make comparing results from different machines less accurate.
