Have you ever experienced these symptoms?

  • Blurred vision
  •
  • Seeing light glare or streaks
  •
  • Double vision
  •
  • Thinking your vision has suddenly returned to normal

Don't ignore these signs! If you experience these symptoms, you should immediately see an ophthalmologist to check for cataracts.

Vision Abnormalities

The first sign is that your vision becomes blurry overall. At night, you may see double images, like two moons, or when driving, you might see light glare and streaks from oncoming headlights. You might also notice a temporary improvement where you can suddenly read without the reading glasses you previously needed.

Causes

  • The primary cause is increasing age.
  •
  • Congenital cataracts (present from birth).
  •
  • A side effect of poorly controlled diabetes.
  •
  • Frequent or prolonged use of oral or topical steroid medication.
  •
  • Exposure to X-rays or UV radiation (not wearing UV-protective sunglasses outdoors).
  •
  • Electric shock injuries.
  •
  • Traumatic injuries from blunt force or penetrating wounds reaching the lens.
  •
  • Acute or chronic glaucoma can also lead to clouding of the eye lens, causing cataracts.

Surgical Methods for Cataract Treatment

Cataract surgery can be performed using two methods: traditional surgery and ultrasound phacoemulsification.

Method 1: Traditional Surgery

This involves making a wide incision and implanting a rigid intraocular lens (IOL). This method may induce astigmatism because stitches are required, and it generally involves a longer recovery time and a higher risk of infection than Method 2.

Method 2: Ultrasound Phacoemulsification (Phaco)

This procedure uses high-frequency ultrasound waves to break up the cataract, which is then suctioned out. A foldable, soft intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted to replace it. This method uses modern, advanced equipment, resulting in **high safety**. Vision is restored quickly, often by the next day, and patients can resume normal activities. The risk of infection is minimal, and **hospitalization is not required**.

Furthermore, accurate measurement of the intraocular lens using modern ultrasound equipment is a crucial step for selecting the correct IOL.

There are several types of intraocular lenses available, depending on your examination results and visual needs:

  1. **Monofocal IOLs: Correct for distance vision, but you will still need reading glasses.**
  2.
  3. **Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs: Correct for near vision (computer work distance), intermediate vision, and distance vision.**
  4.
  5. **Trifocal IOLs: Correct for distance vision, intermediate vision (for computer work), and near vision (for reading).**

For individuals with astigmatism, this can also be corrected. The choice depends on how many visual ranges need correction: distance only, near as well, or all three ranges.

"Although eye diseases rarely cause death, if sight is permanently lost, it cannot be repaired, and the quality of life will be significantly diminished. Therefore, always pay attention to your eyes and get regular eye exams for clear vision."
