During the breastfeeding journey, a mother's body produces an abundant supply of breast milk. However, if some of the milk ducts become blocked by thickened milk residues, the milk flow becomes severely restricted. This causes milk to build up inside the breast (engorgement), making breastfeeding difficult and potentially resulting in the baby not receiving enough milk.

If left untreated for an extended period, these blockages can progress to painful inflammation of the breast tissue (mastitis) or even develop into breast abscesses.

Symptoms

  • Breast engorgement (Swelling, tightness, and a heavy sensation in the breast).
  • Finding a hard, tender lump in the breast.
  • Tenderness, a sharp shooting pain, and localized redness on the breast, which may occur with or without a fever.
  • Decreased milk supply or difficulty expressing/pumping milk.
  • Noticing a small, painful white spot on the nipple (milk bleb/blister) in some cases.

Physical Therapy Treatments for Plugged Milk Ducts

  1. Warm Compresses: Helps relax the tissues, open up the milk ducts, and encourage let-down and milk flow.
  2. Deep-Heat Ultrasound Therapy: Safely increases blood circulation, dilates the blocked milk ducts, and effectively reduces deep tissue pain.
  3. Therapeutic Breast Massage: Gently clears blockages and softens the hardened lumps inside the breast to restore normal flow.
  4. Cold Compresses: Applied after treatment to safely reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation.
