Allergies from Dust Mites

When you reduce the amount of dust mites in your environment, symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma significantly decrease, which also reduces the need for daily medication.

What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are tiny insects that are invisible to the naked eye. Their primary food source is human skin scales (dander) and dead skin cells.

Dust mites thrive in temperatures around 25-30°C with humidity levels of 75-80%. The most common places to find them are in mattresses, pillows, blankets, and carpets because these areas provide the perfect warmth, moisture, and food. Dust mites and Allergies: It is actually the proteins found in their bodies and feces that trigger allergic reactions. After inhaling these particles, patients may experience sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and increased mucus production.

How to Prevent & Eliminate Dust Mites

1. Use Dust Mite Covers: Wrap your mattress, pillows, and bolsters with specialized dust mite-proof covers before putting on your regular linens. These covers are woven so tightly that mites and their waste cannot pass through.

2. Hot Water Wash: Wash bed sheets, pillowcases, and blankets in hot water (55-60°C) for at least 30 minutes once a week.

3. Avoid Carpets: Do not use carpets in the bedroom, as they are a primary breeding ground for dust mites.

4. Minimalism: Keep the bedroom clear of clutter and minimize the amount of upholstered furniture.

Effective Dust Mite Protection Products

High-quality protective products must be made from microfiber or specialized fabrics with an extremely tight weave. This creates a physical barrier that prevents allergens from inside the bedding from coming into contact with your body while you sleep.

Allergy Testing

What can you be tested for?

  • Airborne Allergens: Dust mites, cockroaches, mold, pollen, and pet dander (dog/cat).
  • Food Allergies: Seafood, wheat, peanuts, etc.
  • Food Additives: MSG and other preservatives.

Testing Methods and Treatment Options

  • Skin Prick Test: A fast and effective way to identify specific triggers on the skin.
  • Blood Test: Measuring specific IgE antibodies for allergies.
  • Allergy Immunotherapy (Vaccines): A long-term treatment to build immunity against specific allergens.
