Songkran Survival Guide: How to Play in the Water Without Ruining Your Skin
Hurry up and get ready! Songkran is the event many of us look forward to all year. While splashing water keeps you cool and refreshed, there is a major enemy lurking: the scorching sun.
Follow these tips to keep your skin from getting "wrecked" during the festivities:
- Sunscreen is non-negotiable: Apply sunscreen before leaving the house. Choose a formula with SPF 50+ and PA+++. Even areas covered by light clothing should be protected. Most importantly, re-apply every 2 hours until you are back indoors.
- Cover up: Wear a wide-brimmed hat or choose long-sleeved shirts and long pants to provide a physical barrier against UV rays.
- Time your play: The sun is most intense between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Avoid these peak hours to prevent painful sunburns and skin darkening. The best time to play is in the late afternoon or evening!
- Choose bright colors: Wear bright-colored clothing like red, yellow, white, or light blue. Avoid dark colors because they absorb heat and UV radiation much more effectively.
- Watch out for irritants: Avoid colorful powders (Din Sor Pong) that may contain harmful chemicals. Try to play in areas using clean water to prevent allergic reactions and infections from contaminated water sources.
- First aid for sunburn: If you forget your sunscreen and end up with a burn, apply Aloe Vera gel to soothe the heat and reduce inflammation.
- Don't ignore rashes: If you develop a skin rash, fungal infection, or severe irritation after playing, consult a doctor immediately.
