24-Hour Holter Monitoring

What is a Holter Monitor?

In some cases, a standard EKG may appear normal even if a patient experiences suspicious symptoms. Because heart rhythm issues can be intermittent, doctors recommend the Holter Monitor—a portable EKG device. Once fitted, you can return home or go to work and carry out your normal daily activities. This allows the device to record every heartbeat over a 24-hour period to see if specific activities trigger changes in your heart's electrical activity. After the recording period, a specialist will analyze the data.

Who Should Use a Holter Monitor?

  • Patients who experience unexplained fainting (syncope) or dizziness.
  • Those with symptoms of Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), such as palpitations or "skipped" beats.
  • Individuals with heart conditions that carry a high risk of developing dangerous heart rhythms.

Preparation for Holter Monitoring

Please bathe and clean your body thoroughly before your appointment. Once the device is attached, you will not be able to shower or remove the equipment until the 24-hour recording period is complete.

Procedure Steps

  1. A technician will clean the skin (and may shave small areas of chest hair) to ensure the electrodes stick firmly. These electrodes are connected by wires to a small Holter monitor, approximately 3.5 x 2.5 inches in size.
  2. Once the monitor is fitted, the staff will provide instructions on how to care for the device and how to keep a daily activity log.
  3. After 24 hours, you will return the device and your activity log to the hospital. The physician will then download and interpret the data for a final diagnosis.
