Post-Vaccination Care: Rotavirus Vaccine
Possible Side Effects
- Diarrhea: Some infants may experience mild diarrhea as a reaction to the vaccine. This typically resolves on its own within 2–3 days. You may continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as usual. However, if the diarrhea persists or worsens, it may not be caused by the vaccine, and you should consult a pediatrician.
- Bloating and Gas: Your baby may experience some abdominal discomfort or gas. It may help to slightly increase the time between feedings and ensure you burp your baby thoroughly after every meal. These symptoms usually disappear within 2–3 days.
- Irritability and Fussiness: If your baby becomes unusually fussy, try to remain calm and comforting. Use soothing techniques such as gentle rocking, playing soft music, or taking a short walk. Physical closeness and comfort can help soothe your baby during this period.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Severe allergic reactions or serious complications are extremely rare. However, seek medical attention immediately if your child experiences any of the following:
- Severe Allergic Reaction: Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, and eyes.
- Bloody Stools: Any trace of blood in the infant's stool.
- Signs of Intussusception: Severe abdominal bloating combined with forceful vomiting and "currant jelly" stools (stools mixed with blood and mucus).
