Post-Vaccination Care: IPD (Invasive Pneumococcal Disease) Vaccine
Common Side Effects After Vaccination
- Fever: Occurs in 1–10% of cases. Use a damp cloth to wipe the neck and joints to reduce body temperature. If the fever persists, administer fever-reducing medication as recommended by your physician. Symptoms usually subside within 2–3 days. If the fever does not improve, seek medical attention.
- Pain, Swelling, or Redness: Occurs in 1–10% of cases. If the area is swollen or the child is very fussy from pain, apply a cold compress to soothe the area. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within 1–3 days.
- Diarrhea or Vomiting: Occurs in 1–10% of cases. Continue regular breastfeeding or formula feeding. Symptoms generally disappear within 2–3 days.
- Irritability/Fussiness: Occurs in less than 1% of cases. Do not panic; use soothing techniques such as gentle rocking, hugging, walking, or playing soft music to provide comfort and warmth.
- Skin Rash: Occurs in less than 1% of cases. A mild rash may appear after vaccination and will fade on its own without the need for topical medication.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
While severe allergic reactions to vaccines are very rare, they can be serious. Seek medical help immediately if your child experiences the following:
- Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
- High Fever: A temperature that is significantly elevated or persistent.
- Prolonged Local Reaction: Excessive pain or swelling at the injection site that lasts longer than 2–3 days.
