Post-Vaccination Care: Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Vaccine
Common Side Effects After Vaccination
- Fever and Discomfort: Occurs in more than 10% of cases. The child may feel unwell or experience soreness at the injection site. Use a damp cloth to wipe the neck and joints to lower body temperature. If the fever persists, administer fever-reducing medication as directed by your physician. If symptoms do not improve after 2–3 days, seek medical attention.
- Vomiting and Loss of Appetite: Occurs in more than 10% of cases. You may continue normal feeding, though the child may eat less than usual. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within 1–2 days.
- Fussiness and Irritability: Occurs in more than 10% of cases. If your child is crying or fussy, stay calm and use soothing techniques like gentle rocking, hugging, or playing soft music to provide comfort and security.
- Pain, Swelling, or Redness: Occurs in less than 10% of cases. If the area is swollen or causes significant distress, apply a cold compress to relieve the pain. Swelling and soreness usually disappear within 1–3 days.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
While severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, they can occur. Seek medical help immediately if your child experiences any of the following:
- Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
- High Fever: A very high or persistent temperature.
- Prolonged Local Reaction: Severe pain or swelling at the injection site that lasts longer than 2–3 days.
