Post-Vaccination Care: Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccine

Child care after Chickenpox vaccination

Common Side Effects After Vaccination

  1. Fever: Use a damp cloth to wipe the neck and joints to help lower the body temperature. If the fever persists, you may administer fever-reducing medication as recommended by your physician.
  2. Pain, Swelling, or Redness: If the child experiences swelling or shows signs of significant pain (excessive fussiness), apply a cold compress to the injection site to provide relief.
  3. Duration of Local Symptoms: Swelling and pain at the injection site typically resolve on their own within 5–7 days.
  4. Vaccine-Related Rash: A mild rash resembling chickenpox may appear around the injection site. This rash will gradually develop and disappear naturally without the need for topical ointments.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

While severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, they can be serious. Seek medical help immediately if your child experiences any of the following:

  1. Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Including hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
  2. High Fever: A very high or persistent temperature.
  3. Prolonged Local Pain: Intense pain or swelling at the injection site that lasts longer than 2–3 days.
  4. Extensive Skin Reaction: A red rash covering the entire body or skin that begins to peel.
