Post-Vaccination Care: Hepatitis B Vaccine

Child receiving Hepatitis B vaccination and post-care

Common Side Effects (Occur in more than 1 in 10 cases)
  1. Pain, Swelling, or Redness: If the child experiences swelling or shows signs of significant pain (excessive fussiness), apply a cold compress to the injection site. These local reactions typically resolve on their own within 2 days.
  2. Irritability and Fussiness: If your child is crying or restless, do not panic. Use gentle soothing techniques such as rocking, hugging, walking, or playing soft music to provide comfort and security.
Rare Side Effects (Occur in less than 1 in 1,000 cases)
  1. Abnormally High Fever: A temperature of **≥38.8°C**. Use a damp cloth to wipe the child's body and administer fever-reducing medication as recommended by your physician. These symptoms generally subside within 1–3 days. If the fever does not improve, seek medical attention immediately.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

While severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, they can be serious. Seek medical help immediately if your child experiences any of the following:

  1. Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
  2. Persistent High Fever.
  3. Prolonged Local Reaction: Intense pain or swelling at the injection site that lasts longer than 2–3 days.
