Post-Vaccination Care: Hepatitis A Vaccine

Child receiving Hepatitis A vaccination and post-care

Common Side Effects (Occur in 1–10% of cases)
  1. Pain, Swelling, or Redness: If the child experiences swelling or significant pain (excessive fussiness), apply a cold compress to the injection site. These symptoms typically resolve on their own within 1–3 days.
  2. Warning Signs: If the swelling feels like a hard lump, the child moves their limbs less than usual, or if there is any pus at the site, seek medical attention immediately as this may indicate an infection.
  3. Low-Grade Fever: Use a damp cloth to wipe the child’s body to help lower their temperature.
  4. Fussiness: Do not panic if the child is irritable. Use soothing techniques like gentle rocking, hugging, walking, or soft music to provide comfort and warmth.
Uncommon Side Effects (Occur in less than 1% of cases)
  1. Itchy Skin Rash: This typically disappears on its own within 2–3 days. No topical medication is necessary.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

While severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, they can be serious. Seek medical help immediately if your child experiences any of the following:

  1. Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or eyes.
  2. High Fever.
  3. Prolonged Local Reaction: Intense pain or swelling at the injection site that lasts longer than 2–3 days.
