Bronchitis in Children
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes (the airways that carry air to the lungs). It is a very common respiratory condition found in children.
Causes
- Viral Infections: The most common cause, including Influenza, RSV, and other cold viruses.
- Bacterial Infections: Such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma, etc.
Associated Conditions
- Allergies (Allergic Rhinitis)
- Sinusitis
Symptoms
Initial symptoms often mimic a common cold, such as a runny nose. However, the cough will become more persistent and productive (coughing up phlegm). The mucus may appear thick, cloudy, yellow, or green. Fever may or may not be present. In some cases, the child may experience shortness of breath or wheezing.
Treatment
- Antibiotics: Prescribed only if a bacterial infection is suspected.
- Medication: Bronchodilators to open the airways and expectorants to help clear mucus.
- Hydration: Encourage the child to drink plenty of warm water.
- Chest Physical Therapy: Includes chest percussion and/or suctioning to help remove stubborn phlegm from the lungs.
Prevention
- Stay Up-to-Date on Vaccines: Ensure your child receives vaccinations for Measles, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), and Influenza.
- Avoid Exposure: Keep children away from individuals with colds or respiratory infections.
- Avoid Crowds: Minimize time in crowded places like malls or markets during outbreaks of viral infections.
Warning Signs: When to See a Doctor Immediately
If your child has a high fever, severe persistent cough, or shows signs of labored breathing (shortness of breath), please seek medical attention at the hospital immediately.
