Post-Vaccination Care: Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, and Polio (DTaP-IPV)
Possible Side Effects
- Fever: Occurs in less than 1% of cases. Use a damp cloth to wipe the neck and joint areas (armpits, groin) to reduce body temperature. If the fever persists, you may administer fever-reducing medication as prescribed by your doctor.
- Local Reactions: Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site. This is found in 1–10% of cases. If the child shows signs of pain or is unusually fussy, apply a cold compress to the area to soothe the discomfort.
- Seizures: Extremely rare. While there are no specific frequency reports, high and persistent fevers can sometimes trigger febrile seizures in susceptible children.
First Aid for Seizures (While En Route to the Hospital)
If your child experiences a seizure, please follow these safety steps immediately:
- Safe Positioning: Lay the child on their side or stomach with their head turned to the side to prevent choking (aspiration).
- Do Not Insert Objects: Never put solid objects, fingers, or spoons into the child’s mouth, as this increases the risk of choking and injury.
- Continuous Cooling: Continue to wipe the child's body with a damp cloth during the trip to the hospital to lower the body temperature as much as possible.
When to Seek Emergency Medical Attention
Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare but require immediate medical intervention. Seek emergency care immediately if your child experiences:
- Rapid Swelling: Immediate swelling of the face, lips, or neck.
- Severe Distress: Loss of consciousness or significant difficulty breathing.
