Colorectal cancer is becoming increasingly common among the Thai population. Therefore, regular screening is recommended for early detection of abnormalities in the bowel. When abnormalities are found in the initial stages, treatment is much more effective.
Why is a Colonoscopy Effective?
A colonoscopy provides the clearest visualization of the large intestine. The advantage is that the doctor can examine the inside of the colon without surgery. A scope, about the size of a little finger, is gently inserted through the anus to examine the entire large intestine (rectum, sigmoid, transverse, and ascending colon) and the distal small intestine. The images captured by the scope are displayed on a television screen, allowing for a thorough examination of all internal details. This procedure can detect abnormalities at their very start, ensuring high accuracy in diagnosis and treatment.
When Should You Get a Colonoscopy?
- Individuals **aged 50 and above** should undergo a colonoscopy **every 3–5 years**, even without experiencing any symptoms.
- If you have a **family member with colorectal cancer**, you should be screened **10 years earlier** than the age at which your relative was diagnosed (e.g., if a relative was diagnosed at age 55, you should be screened at age 45).
- If you experience abnormal symptoms such as **changes in stool consistency, alternating constipation and diarrhea, chronic abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or iron-deficiency anemia.**
Preparation Before Colonoscopy
- The doctor will provide the appointment card and instructions for colonoscopy preparation. Please follow the doctor's recommendations regarding diet and laxatives to ensure the bowel is clean for the examination.
- You must bring a relative with you, and the patient is **not permitted to drive** after the procedure, as intravenous sedation will be administered, which impairs driving ability.
