This procedure uses a flexible, small tube (endoscope) inserted through the mouth to examine the **esophagus**, **stomach**, and **first part of the small intestine (duodenum)**. The images are viewed on a TV screen and through the scope to check for inflammation, ulcers, tumors, take tissue samples (biopsies) to detect cancer cells, culture specimens for bacteria, and perform endoscopic treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding.
When Should You Consider a Gastroscopy?
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Unexplained vomiting, or vomiting blood (hematemesis)
- Abdominal pain or discomfort, persistent pain below the breastbone (epigastric discomfort)
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
Preparation Before Gastroscopy
- Do not consume any food or drink for at least 6 hours before the examination.
- If you have removable dentures, please take them out.
- You must bring a relative with you, as the ability to drive will be impaired if intravenous sedation is administered.
