Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
Diagnosis and Treatment of Biliary and Pancreatic Ducts
ERCP involves inserting a high-definition endoscope through the mouth, past the esophagus and stomach, and into the opening of the bile duct in the small intestine. A contrast agent is then injected, followed by X-ray imaging, to check for abnormalities in the biliary and pancreatic systems. It is also used for therapeutic procedures: if a blockage is found, tissue can be biopsied and a stent (drainage tube) inserted; if gallstones are present in the common bile duct, the doctor can use specialized tools to retrieve or crush the stones to remove them from the duct.
Using Khon Kaen Ram Hospital's 4K-quality endoscopic technology, patients receive efficient and safe examination and treatment.
The advantage of this procedure is that it is non-surgical, requires no incision, offers fast recovery, and reduces hospital stay duration.
Conditions Suitable for ERCP Treatment
- Jaundice
- Stones in the common bile duct
- Obstruction of the pancreatic or bile ducts
- Tumors of the bile duct or pancreas
- Pancreatitis caused by stones in the common bile duct
- Leakage of the bile or pancreatic ducts

Self-Care After ERCP
You should avoid hot foods and eat soft, mild-flavored foods for at least 2-3 days. You might feel abdominal bloating after the endoscopy, but this should gradually improve. If you experience abnormal symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, severe abdominal tightness/discomfort, shortness of breath, or fever, return to the doctor immediately.
Preparation Before ERCP
- Stop taking anti-platelet or blood-thinning medication 7 days before the treatment.
- Do not consume any food or drink for at least 6 hours before the endoscopy.
- Inform the doctor if you have any underlying conditions and a history of allergies to medication, seafood, or contrast media.
