Pos Pac Rsv Baby

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is commonly found in young children and can lead to pneumonia. Outbreaks often occur during the rainy season through early winter, particularly when school starts at the beginning of the rainy season.

Transmission

The virus spreads through contact with an infected person's respiratory secretions, entering the body via the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth, or directly through touch, such as shaking hands or touching contaminated objects and toys.

Symptoms

Initial symptoms are similar to a common cold: fever, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, and headache. If the virus progresses to the lungs, it damages the respiratory lining, causing inflammation of the lungs and bronchioles. This can lead to secondary bacterial infections, resulting in shortness of breath and severe coughing. In severe cases, it can lead to fatal respiratory failure, especially in infants and young children, or when treatment is delayed.

Treatment

There is currently no specific antiviral drug; treatment focuses on managing symptoms.

General Prevention

Wash your hands before touching children, wear a face mask, and frequently clean toys and objects. If a child is infected with RSV, ensure they have fully recovered before they return to school.

Prevention with RSV Immunoprophylaxis (Ready-to-Use Immunity)

RSV immunoprophylaxis (Nirsevimab) is a ready-to-use antibody injected into the body. This provides rapid protection against severe lower respiratory tract disease caused by the RSV virus.

RSV Immunoprophylaxis Dosing Schedule

  • For infants aged **0 – 12 months**: Recommended single injection (1 dose).
  • For children with risk factors aged **12 – 24 months**: Recommended 2 doses.

Risk factors for severe RSV infection include premature birth, congenital heart disease, premature infants at risk of chronic lung disease, children with underlying respiratory issues, or children with immunodeficiency, etc.

Benefits of RSV Immunoprophylaxis for Infants and Toddlers

  1. Reduces the chance of RSV infection by up to 79.5%.
  2. Reduces the risk of hospitalization due to lower respiratory tract infection caused by RSV by up to 83.2%.
  3. Reduces disease severity and the chance of requiring intensive care (ICU) treatment by 75.3%.

Recommendations

  • The injection should be given during the peak RSV season, typically from June to October every year.
  • Infants born during the outbreak season can receive the injection immediately after birth.
  • RSV immunoprophylaxis (Nirsevimab) remains effective for up to 5 months, covering the entire typical outbreak period.

Cost of RSV Immunoprophylaxis

  • 1 Dose (Newborns – 12 months): **19,900 Baht**
  • 2 Doses (Children with risk factors, aged 12 – 24 months): **37,900 Baht**

Important Notes

  • The price includes doctor's fees and service charges.
  • Prices are valid from January 1 to December 31, 2026.
  • The hospital reserves the right to change prices without prior notice.
  • Please schedule an appointment in advance (Recommended to inject during the rainy season outbreak period: June – October).
