Exercise Stress Test (EST)
Many patients with heart disease show no symptoms while at rest. Therefore, a specialized diagnostic method is required: the Exercise Stress Test. During this procedure, the patient is monitored via EKG while walking or running on a treadmill to increase the heart rate. The physician evaluates the cardiac response; if there is significant coronary artery blockage, the patient may experience shortness of breath or chest pain, and the EKG graph will show abnormalities that are invisible during rest.
Who Should Get an EST?
Individuals with the following risk factors should undergo an EST annually to screen for cardiovascular risks:
- Smokers.
- Individuals aged 35 years and older.
- Those with obesity (BMI greater than 25).
- Anyone who has experienced chest pain, tightness, or unusual fatigue during physical exertion.
- Patients with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
- Individuals with a family history of heart disease or stroke.
Preparation for the EST
- Fast: Avoid food and water for 2-3 hours before the test to prevent discomfort or cramping.
- Avoid Stimulants: Refrain from alcohol, tea, and coffee for at least 12 hours, as they can interfere with the test results.
- Medical History: Inform the physician about any chronic diseases or medications you are currently taking.
- Asthma: If you use an inhaler, please bring it with you to the test.
EST Procedure Steps
- Technicians attach EKG electrodes to the chest, arms, and legs, and a blood pressure cuff to the arm to monitor vitals throughout the test.
- The test begins with a slow walk on the treadmill. Speed and incline are increased every 3 minutes. Staff will continuously monitor your EKG, pulse, and blood pressure while checking for symptoms.
- The test concludes once the target heart rate is achieved, or if the patient becomes too fatigued or experiences symptoms that require stopping.
- The entire process takes approximately 1 hour.
