Warning: Ticks and Disease-Carrying Pests

Recently, Lyme Disease has been a significant public health topic. While common worldwide, it is transmitted through tick bites. Although there have been no official reports of the bacteria being found in local Thai ticks, the first case in Thailand involved a traveler returning from abroad. Lyme disease can cause fever, joint pain, headaches, and a stiff neck. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the brain, leading to severe neurological issues or dementia. It is treatable with antibiotics, but early detection is vital.

During the rainy season, the Department of Health warns of increased risks from venomous animals and disease-carrying insects that can be life-threatening. Here is how to protect yourself:

Tick

Ticks

Prevention: Avoid areas where ticks live, such as leaf piles, tall grass, and dense bushes. Wear protective clothing that covers your skin. If bitten, clean the wound immediately with antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection.

Snake

Snakes

Prevention: Prevent snakes from entering your home by eliminating their food sources, like rats. Seal any gaps or holes around the house that could serve as entry points.

Rove Beetle

Rove Beetles (Paederus)

These insects have black and red segments. When touched, they release a fluid (pederin) that causes skin burning, blisters, and dermatitis.
Prevention: Do not slap or crush them with bare hands. Blow them off or use a tissue to remove them. Install window screens and use bed nets. If skin irritation occurs, see a doctor immediately.

Millipede

Millipedes

Some species secrete a toxin that causes skin burns and pain.
Treatment: Wash the affected area with plenty of water and apply antiseptic. If the toxin enters your eyes, rinse with warm water and seek medical help. Keep your garden clear of damp debris and seal cracks in your home.

Fly and Cockroach

Flies and Cockroaches

Prevention: Keep your home clean, cover all food, and dispose of trash and food scraps in sealed bins to avoid attracting these pests.

Mosquito

Mosquitoes

The primary carrier of Dengue Fever.
Prevention: Destroy breeding grounds by emptying standing water from containers. Keep water jars tightly sealed. Use mosquito repellent, wear long sleeves, and install screens on windows.

If you experience unusual symptoms after a bite or sting, please consult a doctor immediately. Closely supervise young children to ensure they do not touch dangerous insects or animals.
